First Facebook Bans Breastfeeding Pics, Now Youtube Bans Breastfeeding Video
Jiminy Christmas when will these people learn??
Around the time of the Bill Maher breastfeeding comments, and Facebook banning breastfeeding photos, the League of Maternal Justice website was formed. Their purpose- advocate and educate on all matters relating to mothers and babies. Showing their support to nursing mothers everywhere, they created a video montage of readers photos showing the true beauty of breastfeeding. According to the website, “Their YouTube video received over 90,000 views and several honors, including the top 5 discussed news and politics video three days in a row.”
A few minutes ago I got notice that YouTube has since banned that video. Not marked it explicit as they do other videos where there is FAR more skin showing, and any number of activities one is not legally allowed to do in public as they are breastfeeding. Banned it. As far as I know, the ladies at League of Maternal Justice have not gotten an answer yet as to why this video was taken down, but I have no doubt moms everywhere across the blogosphere will be arming themselves with keyboards and nursing bras and letting Youtube know just how disgusting this shameful hypocrisy is.
Pretty sad when the ass-backward state of Alabama recognizes breastfeeding as a normal act, yet Youtube does not.

this is horrible -and I have to say all this hypocrisy is really getting me down - each incident leaves me with less and less energy to fight back. I fear that soon all I will have left is just the wishing that it were not so. Where is all this hatred coming from? I just don’t understand - I need a good shot in the arm to energize me.

No doubt we’ll have to wait til You Tube actually responds to know the reasoning behind their actions but …. is it POSSIBLE that rather than removing it for assumably being offensive that they did so as an act of some sort of protection? Just hear me out on this one. Of the alleged 90,000 views the video got, how many of those do you really think were from mothers or people looking to learn about breastfeeding or even people wanting to support breastfeeding? It just seems, given the amount of young wannabe porn starts flashing the world on You Tube, that there are a fair amount of pervs watching as well. And I would bet good money that at least half of the page views were of that nature. Frankly, I wouldn’t want some nutjob fondling himself while watching me breastfeed. I glanced through You Tube TOS and didn’t see anything glaringly obvious, but you never know.
I’m not agreeing with Bill Maher, or any of the other people that want to ban breastfeeding in public. But let me just say that it’s only a fight if you make it one. I’m not advocating letting these type of people steamroll breastfeeding mothers into hiding, but I really and truly think that the reaction by the breastfeeding community is only fueling the fire. If we want to be taken seriously, an angry group of screaming, lactating women waggling their breasts about in front of everyone just to prove a point is probably NOT going to produce the desired response.

Lizzi actually has a good point. Maybe they received complaints from some of those in the video, too? Or maybe the comments got too nasty. I know that one of my favorite pictures of my son (his feet) on Flickr got waaaay more views than the rest of my pictures, and for that reason I made it private. There are some very strange people out there. Now, if Youtube comes out and says that the breastfeeding was offensive to some, then I’ll tell them to stick their heads where the sun don’t shine.

It’s outrageous! I ran across a video this morning of graphic anal sex on You Tube. This was not the first sexually explicit video that I’ve come across on You Tube. Why aren’t these being removed? You Tube needs to focus on the actual inappropriate videos being uploaded. I don’t let my kids surf You Tube without me because of the abundance of sexually explicit videos. What in the world is wrong with our society?

As a social media marketer who follows Youtube pretty closely, my bet is actually that it has to do with the use of the Christina Agulara (sp) song.
I highly doubt (but could be wrong) that the group paid licensing fees before using the song as the soundtrack. YouTube has been cracked down on pretty hard this year for copyright infringement. If Agulara is on one of the labels doing the crack down, then the very fact that the video WAS so popular probably got it on the radar of someone who monitors such things.
While it’s possible it was removed because of the content of the pictures, I really think they may be jumping to conclusions. I’d need to hear from YouTube before I could support any type of freak-out over this.

Oh boy… as a nursing mom myself (times 2, doing the second time now)–this could really piss me off. It is hard enough to deal with nursing in public as a woman with the looks and all; but this? Ridiculous.

I’m ticked off at the whole lot of them - YouTube, MySpace, etc. I even put out my ticked off blog as a bulletin on MySpace - I’m sure my 20 year old male cousins loved it! Anyway, good for you for taking up the cause.

I am wanting to know why they banned the video! I showed it to my hubby and told him what you tube did and he says its all BS!!! There is nothing wrong with the video…and I agree with him!!!

If they are ok with the risk of a perv looking at the pics, then who is YouTube to make that decision for them?

What I really think it boils down to is men are jealous. Yes, the small-penised men of the world are jealous when they see a woman’s breast used for anything other than their pleasure. It makes them uncomfortable and they don’t know how to deal with their discomfort other than say it’s wrong. Not an uncommon reaction for humans in general.
